A Hull-based accountancy and business advice firm has revamped its Payroll team in an effort to free up time for business owners, so they can concentrate on running their businesses, without having to worry about frequently complex payroll matters.

A fresh team of experienced specialists is now in place at Smailes Goldie Group, to assist clients with the full range of payroll-related matters.

“We have just two goals as a Payroll team,” says Manager Jill Wernham.

“They are to ensure that payroll is administered accurately and that we free up business owners to focus on growing their businesses.”

Jill joined Smailes Goldie Group at the beginning of the year, tasked with revamping its Payroll service.

She said: “Business owners can be lulled into a false sense of security at the outset when they have only a handful of staff and the business is just getting off the ground. However, frequent legislative changes and increasing staff numbers mean that the amount of work required to keep on top of payroll can rapidly spiral and take up more and more time – time that could otherwise be spent on growing the business.

“Payroll demands become more onerous year on year, with new requirements from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and changing rates of workplace pension contributions, maternity and paternity pay, not to mention the national minimum and living wages.

“There are also things like benefits in kind and student loan deductions to consider, which can make the whole process even more complicated.”

Jill brings considerable experience to the role, having worked in payroll positions for more than 40 years, during which she has also held senior positions within the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) – the national representative organisation for payroll specialists. This involved, amongst other things, representing the profession nationally and working with the Government in the preparation of new legislation.

This experience equips her with an exceptional level of knowledge which has helped drive forward the payroll team at Smailes Goldie Group.

Jill has brought Kerry Smith, Susan Ward and Sophie McDougall to the payroll team. The quartet joined Steve Hollands, who started at Smailes Goldie in 2017 and Anne Britchford, who started at the firm in 2016.

All six possess considerable experience in payroll matters and are well-versed in the challenges involved in administering payroll for firms old and new, large and small alike. The team runs payroll each month for employers with anywhere between one and 600 employees.

“The only thing that is typical about our clients is that they are not typical,” said Jill.

“With so much variety amongst the business community, our first principle is that there can be no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach

“We get to know our clients so that we can deal with their payroll requirements in a way that suits them, their businesses and their priorities.”

She added that the team takes a great deal of pride in this approach.

“One of the main strengths of the team that we have assembled is that it has a particularly wide range of expertise, meaning that it is rare that an issue would arise that nobody on the team has experience of.”
